Fishing at both public and private fisheries is subjected to permits (licenses). Permits are usually issued as day tickets, valid for each separated fishery. The cost related to fishing permits (licenses) varies widely from one fishery to another. Lower prices can be expected for rivers or lakes offering little or no price inclusive services (full board or self catering accommodation). Guiding usually is in general either optional or mandatory.
Sea Trout Fishing
The sea trout season starts in April and extends into late October. Early spring as well as late July, August, September and October is in general the prime season. Some of the most productive rivers are located in the southern part of the country. These rivers are primarily sea trout rivers supporting small stocks of salmon and arctic char. Usually permits (licenses) must be booked with good advance notice. Full Board or Self-Catering lodging is available.
Brown Trout & Arctic Char
The main brown trout & arctic char fishing season starts in May, except for the highland lakes, which open around mid-June. The season for the lowland rivers & lakes ends in late September, and the highland lakes’ season ends in late August. Brown trout river fishing permits must usually be booked with good advance notice. Full Board or Self-Catering lodging is available. Permits for lake fishing can usually be booked with shorter notice, but with exceptions.
Salmon Fishing
The Salmon season starts in June and extends into mid-September. In a number of late-run rivers, fishing ends at the close of September, but few ocean ranching salmon rivers are open until late October. The prime and highest-priced season is in general the period of mid-July until mid-August. Many of the most productive salmon rivers are located in the south, south west and in the northern part of the country. Usually permits must be booked with good advance notice. Full Board or Self-Catering lodging is available. Many salmon river permits are only provided with mandatory Full Board lodging plus guiding.
Sea Char Fishing
The sea char season starts in May and extends into late September, with late July and August as the in general prime season. Many of the most productive rivers are located in the western and the northern part of the country. Usually permits must be booked with good advance notice. Full Board or Self-Catering lodging is available.
